Hon Hai still seeking location for automation investment

Taipei, Jan. 22 (CNA) Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world's largest contract electronics maker, said Tuesday that it is looking for a location in the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) to build an intelligent robotics and automation equipment production hub. In October 2011, the company announced a plan for the automation investment that will use robots and other automation equipment to counter rising labor costs, in particular in China. The manufacturer now operates a broad production base in China, employing about 1 million workers there. Hon Hai said its plan to build an automation equipment production base in the CTSP remains intact. It said it is taking into account a wide range of conditions in various sites in the science park before finalizing the location for the investment. The comments came after local media said Hon Hai will move the investment plan to the science park's Erlin facility located in Changhua County instead of the previously planned site in the Taichung park. The report said that Hon Hai is expected to pour about NT$100 billion (US$3.45 billion) into the CTSP for the investment and that if the company moves the plan to Erlin, the investment is expected to become the largest project there. According to the report, the Erlin park can provide Hon Hai with as much as 100 hectares to build the production base, while the Taichung site cannot offer enough space for the investment project, the report said. In addition to automation equipment production, Hon Hai's project in the science park will produce other precision machines and components for a variety of applications, including auto production, medical care and cloud technology-based development, market sources said.
