Acer remains No. 2 PC vendor in Asia-Pacific: report

Taipei, Jan. 21 (CNA) Taiwanese computer maker Acer Inc. last year maintained its ranking as the second biggest PC vendor in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of market share, according to a U.S.-based research firm. Acer, however, lost more ground to Lenovo Group Ltd. of China, the top ranked vendor in the region, International Data Corp. (IDC) said in a report Jan. 18. Acer's market share dropped from 11.1 percent in 2011 to 10.1 percent last year, while Lenovo recorded an annual increase, from 21.8 percent to 24.6 percent, on the back of a strong performance in India, the report said. Meanwhile, Asustek of Taiwan, which continued its strategy of targeting lower tier cities in emerging markets with entry-level products, ranked fifth, expanding its regional market share from 6.2 percent to 7.5 percent, IDC said. In third and fourth places were American computer makers Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) and Dell Inc., respectively, the research firm said. Both companies saw reduced market shares, with HP's dropping to 8.9 percent and Dell's to 8.7 percent, the report said. IDC's data showed that the Asia-Pacific personal computer market, excluding Japan, declined last year by an annual 2 percent to 121 million units, recording a full year contraction for the first time. It noted that mature markets in the region were affected by smartphone and tablet sales, which hurt regional PC shipments in general. "Initiatives such as ultrabooks and Windows 8 haven't reinvigorated the PC market as much as the industry had hoped," said Avinash K. Sundaram, senior analyst for client devices research at IDC. "In light of this softness, IDC expects growth to remain muted in the upcoming years," he said in the report. The global PC market last year fell more sharply than the Asia-Pacific region, declining 3.5 percent from 2011 to 352.7 million units, market information advisory firm Gartner Inc. said last week. HP was ranked as the world's largest personal computer vendor in 2012, while Acer and Asustek took the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively, Gartner said. (By Jeffrey Wu)
