Atomic Energy Council: nuclear-free homeland is an issue of political manipulation

Query from Taiwan News on January 7:
Attention: Atomic Energy Council

…regarding a recent poll showing that more than half of those surveyed support a nuclear-free policy as well as the suspension of construction on the 4th Nuclear Power Plant on the grounds of safety concerns. We are keen to learn whether your office is operating in accordance with public opinion.

Reply by Atomic Energy Council on January 15:

…let me point out that the nuclear-free homeland (NFH) has long been a contentious issue in Taiwan and, sadly, is politically manipulated. Even worse, too much populism has come into play that the nuclear policy debate has apparently departed from rational basis. … Yet if the opinion is somehow biased, then the government has to be responsible to deal with the stalemate. … My point is the issue of nuclear safety has been misleadingly distorted, either on purpose or unintentionally. …Our office is responsible for overseeing nuclear safety and shouldn’t have any say about the NFH and the construction of the 4-th NPP. Nevertheless, we will steadfastly adhere to the safety principle and make sure all our nuclear units are operating safely. I don’t think we will make any alteration, in terms of our office operation as opposed to the recent poll per se.
