DPP lawmaker visits Shanghai

Shanghai, Jan. 20 (CNA) Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Hsu Tain-tsair arrived in Shanghai Sunday for a visit. Hsu, a former mayor of Tainan in southern Taiwan, told reporters that his visit has nothing to do with politics. "I have come to see for myself Shanghai's urban planning and development," Hsu said. He is being accompanied by members of the administrative team during his time as Tainan mayor and some business executives. The group will visit major financial institutions, landmark buildings and major development projects in Shanghai before departing for Beijing Jan. 23. The group will also visit Xiamen before returning to Taiwan. Ni Yongjie, deputy director of the Shanghai Institute of Taiwan Studies, said that as Hsu is widely seen a pro-independence activist, his China visit is worth observation. Hsu's trip symbolizes that more DPP heavyweights have come to understand the importance for the party to craft a pragmatic policy on cross-Taiwan Strait relations, Ni said. "It remains to be seen whether pragmatism will go mainstream within DPP ranks," Ni added. (By Chou Hui-ying and Sofia Wu)
