Taiwan donates coats to help Syrian refugees in Jordan

Jerusalem, Jan. 20 (CNA) A batch of 1,000 coats donated by Taiwanese people have been delivered to a Christian church in Jordan for distribution to Syrian refugees in the Jordanian border town of Mafraq. The coat donation drive was sponsored by several Christian churches in Taiwan, religious sources said Sunday. A Jordan-based Taiwanese businessman surnamed Bien used funds donated by the churches to purchase coats from garment factories on the outskirts of Amman for distribution to Syrian refugees, the sources said. Meanwhile, Bien's garment factory is now producing another 10,000 pieces of winter clothing for donation to Syrian refugees. The winter dresses, which will be embroidered with an image symbolizing Taiwan and Arabic word for Taiwan, will be ready for delivery in one month, Bien said. All of the clothes will be delivered to Taiwan's representative office in Jordan for distribution to Syrian refugees by the Jordanian government, he added. According to the United Nations statistics, there are nearly 140,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan at present, more than half of whom are under the age of 18. (By Kuo Shu-feng and Sofia Wu)
