Tamsui sees year's lowest temperature (update)

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Tamsui in northern Taiwan recorded the year's lowest temperature in a low-lying area in Taiwan Sunday as a cold surge hit the island, the Central Weather Bureau said. The temperature in the coastal area of Tamsui broke the 2012 low several times before reaching a low of 7.3 degrees Celsius at 6:58 p.m., the bureau's data showed. The previous low for the year was 8.2 degrees in Tamsui in January. An independent weather station at National Central University in Taoyuan County recorded an even lower temperature than the weather bureau's low, with the mercury there hitting 6.8 degrees Celsius at 2 p.m., according to the university's online weather data. Temperatures in most parts of northern and northeastern Taiwan fell below 10 degrees Celsius, with Taipei City registering 8.7 degrees Celsius at 7:01 p.m. and Zhudong in Hsinchu County shivering at 6.1 degrees at 9:00 p.m., according to the Central Weather Bureau. As the cold front swept over Taiwan, snow pellets were falling around a weather observatory on Yangmingshan beginning at 6:10 p.m., when the temperature dipped to 0.1 degrees C.
