Taiwan goes online to woo independent travelers from Singapore

Singapore, Dec. 30 (CNA) The number of Singaporean tourists visiting Taiwan has risen steadily recently, and the government is making a determined marketing push on the Internet to keep visitor numbers from the city state on a steady upward trend. Attracted by Taiwanese idol dramas, films and music, Singaporeans have been visiting the country in record numbers in 2012. In the first 11 months of the year, visitor arrivals from Singapore were up 9.8 percent from a year earlier at 266,922. With the emergence of budget airlines and the spread of travel information online, a growing number of Singaporeans -- nearly half according to a 2011 Tourism Bureau survey -- are traveling to Taiwan on their own rather than as part of tour groups. That has meant a change in strategy for government agencies responsible for promoting travel in Taiwan. Arthur Hsieh, director of the Singapore office of the Taiwan Visitors Association, said his office used to work primarily with travel agencies to drive up visitor numbers. The emphasis today, however, has shifted to the Internet to connect with more independent-minded Singaporean tourists, Hsieh said. His office has set up a Travel Taiwan section on its Facebook page to share the latest tourism information on Taiwan, and its number of fans has risen steadily in the six months since it was launched, Hsieh said. Among Taiwan's strengths that have proved popular among Singaporeans and are actively promoted on the site are Taiwan's hospitality, snacks, night markets, B&Bs and recreational farms, the office said. The new approach is targeted at travelers like a 33-year-old Singaporean who identified himself as William. He visited Taiwan last month after reading books, getting tips from friends and doing research on the Internet to arrange his itinerary. Realizing the potential of bloggers, Hsieh's office has also extended invitations to six major bloggers in Singapore, including Mr. Brown, and Dr. Leslie Tay, to visit Taiwan on theme tours next year.
