Countdown fireworks show at Taipei 101 to be broadcast live globally

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) This year's version of the annual New Year's fireworks extravaganza at Taipei 101 will be broadcast live globally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Friday. The broadcast will start at 11:55 p.m. on Dec. 31, five minutes before the popular fireworks show at the skyscraper, the world's tallest building from 2004 to 2010, begins at the stroke of midnight, the statement said. The 188-second display will be broadcast in its entirety to the world over five international satellites, the statement said. The countdown fireworks spectacular at Taipei 101 was first held in 2005 and has since become one of the most annual popular events in Taiwan, the ministry said. It was the main reason Taipei was chosen by CNN as one of the 10 best places to welcome in 2013. "The Taiwanese capital thinks big when it comes to New Year's Eve, transforming the 509-meter-high Taipei 101 into a fireworks frenzy with a 188-second show," said an article by the news network posted on Dec. 14 called, "From Dubai to Kyoto: How to See in the New Year in Style. "If you can't secure a spot at Rainbow Riverside Park or Elephant Mountain, head to Miramar Entertainment Park, where an equally dazzling display will fill the night sky," the report said. The other locations on the CNN list are Berlin, Dubai, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Kyoto, London, New York, Samoa and Sydney. (By Emmanuelle Tzeng and Elizabeth Hsu)
