Hotels big winners over New Year holiday

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) Hotels around the island are nearly fully booked during the four-day New Year holiday weekend of Dec. 29 to Jan. 1, local operators said Saturday. "We've declined quite a few customers since our hotel rooms have been fully booked months ago," said Chen Kai-huang, a public relations manager at the 60-year-old Grand Hotel in Taipei. Hotel rooms that have good night views, especially that of Taipei 101 -- which is scheduled to stage a fireworks show once the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve -- have been booked half a year in advance, Chen told CNA. "Some customers even made reservations last year right after they enjoyed our services," she added. The situation was similar in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City. The Crowne Plaza Kaohsiung E-Da World and E-Da Skylark Hotel, which are operated by the Kaohsiung-based E United Group, also saw a high demand for its rooms. "Hotel rooms were fully booked a couple of months ago, with quite a few on the waiting list," said Marian Chiang, the group's spokeswoman. With the fireworks show at E-Da World gaining in popularity, customers chose to make reservations early, she told CNA, adding that even the presidential suite has been booked. Located in eastern Taiwan, the resort-style Farglory Hotel Hualien also saw a boom in its accommodation service business this weekend. During the four-day weekend alone, the hotel is expected to see sales of nearly NT$10 million (US$344,330), with 90 percent of its hotel rooms booked, Jannette Lee, the hotel's sales and marketing vice president, told CNA. Since a section of Suhua Highway, which collapsed earlier this year, was re-opened on Friday, more customers have been inquiring about hotel rooms, Lee added. The highway running along Taiwan's east coast links Suao and Hualien City. (By James Lee)
