Taiwan to feature 'Tropic of Cancer' in tourism campaign

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) A summer festival featuring Taiwan's specific geolocation on the Tropic of Cancer, the area around the earth located at latitude 23.5 degrees north, will be launched next year to target foreign tourists from the frigid zones, the Tourism Bureau said Friday. "The concept is about celebrating the summer solstice in Taiwan," said Chen Kuei-hua, director of the bureau's Domestic Tourism Division. There are only 16 countries in the world that lie on the very latitude, Chen said.
That makes Taiwan an interesting travel destination during mid-summer. The idea could be especially appealing to tourists from countries with cold climates, Chen said, adding that the bureau will introduce courses related to the theme of the "Tropic of Cancer" to make it even more fun. For instance, the bureau said it is designing trips around June 21 to different tropic marker parks in Hualien County and Chiayi County so visitors can check out the unique astronomical phenomenon. The bureau is referring to the "shadowless" effect that is created when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer at noon that day. Another must-see spot would be the Beihui Elemetary School, whose name in Chinese means the Tropic of Cancer. It is just 600 meters west of the latitude marker in Chiayi, Chen said. Other events such as a Triathlon at East Rift Valley in Hualien County or music concerts are also being mulled, Chen said. "To sum up, it will be a carnival that is all about nature, sports and music," she said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
