Hon Hai to set up optoelectronics research center in Japan

Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) The world's biggest contract electronics producer, Taiwan-based Hon Hai, plans to set up an optoelectronics research center in Japan, according to the United Evening News, but the company has refused to comment. The reports said the center will tap into the wisdom and talent in Japan to develop new computer and TV monitors manufactured with new materials and new technology. After it is established in 2013, the budget for the center will be more than US$1 billion in the first year, said the reports. Although Hon Hai has refused to confirm whether the report is true, sources within the group told CNA the conglomerate is contemplating setting up the research center in Tokyo and Osaka, to develop the technology vital to the manufacturing of monitors, touchscreens and new materials. Unsatisfied with know-how it has bought from others, Hon Hai is determined to show that it is a leader in the optoelectronics industry, and plans to develop the research center into one of the world's best, said the sources. They said Hon Hai chose Japan as the site for the center because it already has research centers in Taiwan, China and the United States, but not Japan, which has great optoelectronic research potential waiting to be tapped.
