Bill on health insurance for Chinese students clears first hurdle

Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) Amendments to a law governing relations between Taiwan and China that will make it easier for Chinese nationals to live and study in Taiwan passed their first reading at the Legislative Yuan on Friday. One of the amendments to the Act Governing the Relations Between the Peoples of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area will allow Chinese students studying in Taiwan to enroll in the country's health insurance system. Another revision will shorten the period mainland Chinese spouses of Taiwanese nationals need to stay in Taiwan before getting citizenship from six years to four years. After passing a preliminary review at Friday's meeting of the Legislature -- known in Taiwan as passing a first reading -- the two revisions will now be sent to various committees for further review. Once the revisions make it through committee review, they will still have to be presented to the full Legislature for two more readings before they are enacted. Also passing a first reading was a bill to restrict the concentration of ownership of mass media. A total of 18 bills made it through their first reading Friday, including one that creates a legal basis for giving year-end bonuses to retired civil servants, teachers and military personnel.
