Cooler, drier winter forecast until next March

Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) This winter in Taiwan is expected to be cooler and drier than usual due to lower than average sea temperatures near the island, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Friday. Off the east coast of Taiwan, sea temperatures will be below average, in contrast to the waters east of the Philippines, said Cheng Ming-dean, director of CWB's Weather Forecast Center. This pattern could imply a slightly colder-than-usual winter until March, especially in northern and northeastern Taiwan, based on previous observations, Cheng said. In January, temperatures in northern Taiwan usually range from 15.7 to 16.7 degrees Celsius with precipitation of between 60.9 and 104.3 millimeters. In southern Taiwan, the mercury tends to hover between 18.8 and 19.8 degrees, and rainfall averages 2.9 to 17.4 mm in the first month of the year. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
