Ex-fire chief impeached over irregularities

Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) Former National Fire Agency head Huang Chi-min was impeached by the Control Yuan on Friday over his involvement in procurement irregularities during his tenure from 2002 to 2009. Members of the Control Yuan, the branch of Taiwan's government responsible for monitoring the actions of public officials and agencies, decided to impeach Huang by an 11-2 vote. Huang, who retired in October 2009, will be referred to the Public Functionary Disciplinary Sanction Commission under the Judicial Yuan, which will decide on Huang's punishment, which could include revoking his pension. The decision came three days after Huang was indicted by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office on corruption charges. Prosecutors charged Huang with using his position to control agency tenders and line his own pockets with funds that the government had set aside for disaster relief. He accepted NT$19.24 million (US$661,168) in bribes in nine of the agency's major procurement projects in exchange for awarding contracts to favored companies, according to the indictment. Huang has been in custody since Aug. 30. (By Sophia Yeh and Y.F. Low)
