Cold surge forecast from Saturday

Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) The first cold surge in Taiwan this winter is expected to start Saturday, with temperatures dipping to around 10 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau said Friday. A cold surge is defined by the bureau as when the temperature in Taipei City falls to 10 degrees or lower. A significant drop in temperature will be felt late Saturday, while the chances of rain across the island will increase, the bureau said. The weather may be at its coldest Sunday night as the mercury is expected to fall to 8 degrees in coastal areas in northern Taiwan, the bureau added. Temperatures from Saturday to Monday are likely to hover around 10-14, 11-17 and 12-20 degrees in northern, central and southern Taiwan, respectively, according to the weather bureau. The mercury is forecast to rise again from late Monday, and a warmer New Year's Day is likely, with a chance of clear skies, the bureau said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
