Argentina deadline looms for Grupo Clarin breakup

Argentina deadline looms for Grupo Clarin breakup

A media conglomerate that has been a leading critic of the Argentine government is among news organizations that have just a few days left to conform to the nation's anti-monopoly law.
President Cristina Fernandez's point man on the issue said Monday that the government won't expropriate or nationalize private media companies. But Martin Sabatella said the government will make conglomerate Grupo Clarin and other companies comply with the law, which bars any one company from owning too many different media properties.
Sabatella says he'll wait until midnight Friday to accept divestment plans, and any company that doesn't comply will see its licenses auctioned off.
Clarin spokesman Martin Etchevers says Friday's deadline violates legal procedures because a judge hasn't approved the constitutionality of the 3-year-old law.
