3 dead, 24 injured in Taiwan bus crash

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Three people died and at least 24 were injured when a bus overturned on a freeway in Chiayi County Saturday afternoon, reports said.
The driver of a bus on its way from Tainan to Taichung reportedly lost control over his vehicle, which then drove down an embankment to rest on its side, local police said. The precise reason for the accident was not immediately known.
The accident happened around 4:20 p.m. on the northbound side of the Sun Yat-sen Freeway. The bus involved belonged to the Kuo-Kuang Motor Transportation Co., Ltd., one of Taiwan’s most prominent long-distance bus companies.
A driver who witnessed the incident told reporters he saw the bus first hit a black car which spun around and then veer off to the right down the embankment. All the passengers and their luggage had fallen forward inside the bus, with four people who had fallen through the broken windshield and landed in a clearing or in a ditch below, the eyewitness said.
Rescue workers had to take the injured out through the windows because the body of the bus had been wrecked by the accident, reports said.
The Chiayi County Fire Department said it found three people dead, while 24 injured were transferred to three hospitals in the region.
