Apple fires mobile software and retail chiefs

Apple fired the executives in charge of the company’s mobile software efforts and retail stores in a management shake-up in a decade due to embarrassing problems with its new mapping program and unpopular store-related decisions.

The biggest of the changes involved the departure of Scott Forstall, an Apple veteran who for several years ran software development for Apple’s iPad and iPhone products , will leave Apple next year. Mr. Forstall was an important executive at the company and the one who, in many respects, seemed to most closely embody the technology vision of Steven P. Jobs, the former chief executive of Apple who died a year ago.

Apple said in a statement that retail chief John Browett "is leaving," without elaborating; that a search for his replacement is underway; and the retail team would report directly to Cook. Browett had riled up the retail store staff when he reduced the number of employees in his unit.
