Beijing report says Chinese Muslims are in Syria

Chinese state media say Chinese Muslim separatists from the far northwestern region of Xinjiang are fighting alongside al-Qaida and other extremist groups opposed to Syria's government.
The official newspaper Global Times reported Monday that radicals among China's ethnic Turkic Uighur minority have been traveling to Syria since May to join the fighting. It says groups opposed to Beijing's rule over Xinjiang have been organizing passage to Syria for their members. It cites unidentified Chinese anti-terrorism authorities.
The report could not immediately be verified. The Foreign Ministry said Monday it has noted the report and is calling for stronger international cooperation in dealing with Xinjiang groups. A variety of foreign fighters have joined in the 19-month-long Syria conflict that has killed more than 35,000 people.
