The sexual abuse scandal surrounding the late television host Jimmy Savile widened Sunday after the British police arrested a former pop star in connection with the case.

Metropolitan Police arrested Gary Glitter, 68, whose real name is Paul Gadd “on suspicion of sexual offenses.” He was released on bail late Sunday.

The police has launched a criminal investigation into allegations that Savile, with other members who remain alive, has abused more than 300 victims during his 50-year career.

It was alleged Glitter raped a 13-year-old girl in his dressing room at BBC's television center in the 1970s, when the young girls were invited to one of Savile's TV shows.

Glitter was convicted of possessing child pornography in Britain in 1999, and was convicted in Vietnam in 2006 of abusing two girls, ages 10 and 11 years; he served more than two years in prison there.
