El Salvador ousts hundreds of street vendors

The heart of El Salvador's capital resembles a disaster zone following clashes that erupted as city workers removed nearly 1,000 illegal street stalls.
Mayor Norman Quijano sent some 4,000 city workers with heavy machinery and nearly 1,000 police officers to take back streets occupied by some 970 illegal stands and stalls. The vendors fought back, setting up barriers and igniting fires during the weekend battles.
Officials say seven people were injured, though none seriously.
