Taoyuan International Airport ranked 11th worldwide

Taipei, Oct. 28 (CNA) Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Taiwan's main international gateway, was ranked the world's 11th best airport for overall performance in the third quarter of 2012, according to an airport official Sunday. Hsu Chia-jui, general manager of Business Planning and Marketing Department at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Corp., said the airport's ranking was a major improvement from the previous quarter, when it placed 36th. The top 10 airports in the world in the third quarter included Incheon International Airport in South Korea, Changi Airport in Singapore, Beijing Capital International Airport in China, Hong Kong International Airport and Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, Hsu said. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport was rated poorly for parking, the long walking distance between terminals, and inconvenient transportation between the airport and Taipei. The airport's prices for goods, shopping facilities, and the quality of its immigration, aviation, and security services all received high marks, however, Hsu said. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Corp. President Samuel Lin said that after the renovation of Terminal 1 is completed, it will change the impression people have of Taiwan's main gateway, but he noted that the traffic situation will still take time to solve. Both Hong Kong International Airport and Incheon International Airport have subway systems linked to downtown areas, while travelers in Taiwan must currently drive or take a shuttle bus to the airport, Lin said. The situation will improve, however, once the metro system to the airport is completed, which is scheduled for October 2013. (By Lin Shu-kuen and Ann Chen)
