Fanara leads season-opening WCup GS after 1st run

Thomas Fanara of France posted the fastest time in the first run of the season-opening men's World Cup giant slalom on Sunday.
Fanara, who started 12th, benefitted from improving weather conditions as he went down the Rettenbach course in 1 minute, 18.48 seconds to edge second-place Ted Ligety by 0.04.
Manfred Moelgg of Italy was another 0.12 back in third, and Andre Myhrer of Sweden at 0.44 behind was the only other racer to stay within a second of Fanara's time.
Ligety was among the first eight starters who were slowed by fog and snowfall before the sky cleared. The American won the race here last season but ultimately lost his GS title to overall champion Marcel Hirscher of Austria.
Hirscher finished 1.36 off the lead, while Switzerland's Beat Feuz, who had knee surgery after finishing runner-up to the Austrian in the overall standings last season, decided not to start the race.
