Jamaica top cop condemns mob violence

Jamaica's top cop has condemned recent acts of mob justice across the Caribbean island.
Police Commissioner Owen Ellington says "every case of mob killing is classified as a murder" and will be thoroughly investigated.
Ellington's Tuesday statement comes two days after a crowd of residents in the southern city of Portmore killed a 29-year-old man after he was allegedly caught breaking into a house.
The top police commander stressed that Jamaicans should have "every confidence in the justice system."
Jamaicans have intermittently resorted to deadly vigilante justice for years. The justice system is severely backlogged and confidence in the police force has long been low in impoverished communities.
Civic groups have also strongly condemned recent mob killings, saying vigilante justice has no place in a civilized society.
