UK Parliament could temporarily quit famous home

Senior lawmakers say Britain's Houses of Parliament could temporarily leave its storied home to allow major repairs to take place _ prompting calls for legislators to relocate to London's Olympic Park.
John Thurso, a House of Commons Commission member, said on Thursday that the Palace of Westminster needs comprehensive work to remove asbestos, to make improvements to weatherproofing and to upgrade electricity and water supplies.
If lawmakers left Westminster, the work could be done in two to three years. Trying to carry out repairs during vacation periods would mean the improvements could take at least 10 years, Thurso said.
Meg Hillier, a lawmaker with the main opposition Labour Party, called on legislators to switch Westminster for "Eastminster" _ and use the now-vacant media center at east London's Olympic Park.
