Democrats open 2012 convention to rally for Obama

Democrats have called their national convention to order, kicking off a three-day rally behind President Barack Obama's bid for a second term.
Delegates also are moving to adopt a party platform that calls for higher taxes on wealthier Americans while backing same-sex marriage and abortion rights.
Republicans held their own convention last week and nominated Mitt Romney to oppose Obama.
First lady Michelle Obama highlights Tuesday night's speaking schedule. San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will deliver Tuesday's keynote address.
The platform that Democrats will adopt is a sharp contrast from the Republican one. The Republican plan would ban abortion and gay marriage and repeal Obama's health care overhaul.
