Storm leaves three injured, extensive power outages

Taipei, Aug. 28 (CNA) Tropical Storm Tembin has left three people injured and tens of thousands of people without power in southern Taiwan, the Central Emergency Operation Center reported Tuesday. Three residents on outlying Orchid Island were injured after waves up to eight meters high ripped off the roofs of their homes, the center said. The center said that nearly 3,000 people in southern, eastern and central Taiwan had been evacuated to temporary shelters, while large-scale power failures were reported in Kaohsiung, as well as in Pingtung and Taitung counties, affecting more than 15,000 people. Two roads in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung and Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan were being repaired after being damaged by the storm, while agricultural losses were estimated at NT$196.87 million (US$6.57 million), it added. Air traffic was also disrupted, with 29 domestic flights and five international flights either canceled or delayed, according to the Civil Aeronautics Administration. The chaos followed the return of Tembin, which was making its second pass over Taiwan in less than a week. As of 5 p.m., Tembin was centered 160 km east of Yilan County, moving at a speed of 25 kph in a north-northeasterly direction. It was packing winds of 108 kph, with gusts reaching 137 kph, the Central Weather Bureau said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
