Taiwan could join Pacific Rim park initiative

Taipei, Aug. 28 (CNA) A maritime park may be built in Kaohsiung as part of an initiative by a U.S.-based nonprofit group to connect Pacific Rim nations and preserve maritime culture, an official said Tuesday. Two representatives from the organization Pacific Rim Parks are in Kaohsiung to assess the feasibility of building a park in Cijin District, Wu Rong-chuan, vice chairman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' NGO Affairs Committee, said at a regular news briefing. Having built coastal parks in Russia, China, Mexico, South Korea, the Philippines and the United States, the San Diego-based group is now seeking to establish similar spaces in Taiwan, Japan and Peru in the near future, Wu said. "We hope the final decision will be made by the end of this year," Wu said. "It may take six months to complete the work." The project will be led by the Kaohsiung municipal government and civic groups dedicated to environmental protection, Wu said, and local architecture students will also be invited to participate. Students from countries where similar parks have already been completed will also be invited to Taiwan to share their experiences, Wu said. Launched in 1995, Pacific Rim Parks is dedicated to looking for ways to bridge cultures, establish connections and promote cooperation among countries that share the Pacific Ocean. (By Elaine Hou)
