Meeting held to enhance Taiwan's tourism industry

Taipei, Aug. 28 (CNA) Premier Sean Chen held a meeting with business representatives Tuesday to discuss how to improve the quality of Taiwan's tourism industry at a time when visitor numbers are on the rise. Foreign visitor arrivals in the first half of 2012 increased roughly 25 percent from the same period of last year and could surpass 7 million for the full year for the first time in Taiwan's history, Chen said. Developing a tourism industry that can provide quality services is therefore now an important issue, Chen said during his opening remarks at the meeting, which is aimed at soliciting opinions from business representatives. The meeting was attended by Cabinet officials and 26 representatives from the tourism, exhibition and other related industries. Citing the tourism industry as one of the important engines of growth for Taiwan's economy, Chen said the government is looking for ways to support and strengthen tourism-related businesses. "We also hope to enhance tourism by (hosting certain) events,"Chen said, citing the Vienna Festival as an example, noting that such events can help attract a steady number of foreign visitors. Meanwhile, the exhibition industry can be integrated with the tourism sector to help generate higher tourism revenues, Chen said. The meeting was the fourth in a series of five held by the Cabinet to solicit opinions from the private sector as part of its efforts to improve the country's economic development amid a sluggish economy.
