South African adventurer shot in Peru

Doctors at a Lima hospital say a young South African adventurer is in stable condition after being shot and robbed while kayaking from the Amazon River's origin to its mouth.
The father of 24-year-old David du Plessis says his son was shot three times by two young men Saturday on the Ucayali River near the provincial capital of Pucallpa. Louis du Plessis says his son ran about three miles (5 kilometers) after being ambushed on the river. He lost all his possessions.
The father says his son has temporarily lost some hearing, had to have fluid drained from one lung and apparently has a pellet lodged in or near his heart.
Police helped fly the South African to Lima and could not immediately be reached for comment.
