Dutch candidates hold debate before elections

The leaders of the top four political parties heading into Dutch parliamentary elections next month are debating for the first time before a nationwide television audience.
The Sept. 12 election is already shaping up as a virtual referendum on the Netherlands' place in Europe, and Sunday's debate is expected to focus on the EU and the ailing economy.
Anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders wants to leave the 27-nation bloc and reject the euro in favor of the guilder, while outgoing conservative Prime Minister Mark Rutte is pro-European and insists on bringing the country's budget deficit back within EU limits next year.
Emile Roemer, leader of the Socialist Party, wants to remain in the EU, but is calling for more time to bring down debt.
