India moved closer to victory in the first test as New Zealand collapsed to 146-6 at tea on the fourth day after off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed 3-50 on Sunday.
New Zealand needs another 133 runs to avoid an innings defeat after following on 279 behind.
Ashwin, who took a career-best 6-31 in the first innings, dismissed New Zealand captain Ross Taylor (7) as well as left-handers Daniel Flynn (11) and James Franklin (5).
Kane Williamson (52) and opener Brendon McCullum (42) had defied the Indian bowlers in the first session, adding 72 for the second wicket.
In its first innings, New Zealand scored 159 in reply to India's 438.
