Agriculture losses from Typhoon Tembin reach NT$72.86 million

Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) Total agricultural losses from Typhoon Tembin, which brought heavy rainfall to parts of eastern and southern Taiwan, reached NT$72.86 million (US$2.43 million) as of Saturday morning, the Council of Agriculture said. Losses in Taitung County were estimated at NT$35.76 million, while losses in Hualien and Pingtung counties were estimated at NT$34.85 million and NT$2.25 million, respectively. Of the total losses, damage to agricultural produce was estimated at NT$43.26 million, with over 817 hectares of farmland being damaged. Crops of custard apples, bananas, watermelons and papayas were the most heavily affected. Damage to agricultural facilities was put at NT$500,000, while losses in the poultry industry totaled NT$70,000. Farmland that was washed away was estimated to be worth NT$28.85 million.
