Android phones forecast to grab over 70% of global market

Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) Smartphones running on Google Inc.'s Android operating system are expected to exceed 70 percent of the global market share in the second half of this year, according to a Taipei-based research firm. As Android phones accounted for 60 percent of the global market in the first half, more shipments starting from the third quarter from South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., China's Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. will definitely boost the figure, said Luke Lin, an analyst with Digitimes Research. In addition, the increasing sales of mid- to low-priced smartphones in China can help boost the Android phones' global market share to over 70 percent, Lin said in a statement. However, the annual growth of Android phone shipments will drop dramatically from 236.5 percent in 2011 to 89.8 percent in 2012 due to a high base period, he forecast, adding that some 224 million Android phones were shipped worldwide in 2011. Lin also forecast that smartphones running on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system will exhibit good performance in 2012. Over 21 million Windows phones are expected to be shipped in 2012, up 107.8 percent from a year ago, he predicted. Worldwide shipments of Apple Inc.'s iPhones are expected to reach 125 million in 2012, up 35 percent from 93 million in 2011, according to the statement. Research In Motion's BlackBerry smartphones and Nokia Oyj's Symbian will post negative annual growth of -41.4 percent and -65.8 percent, respectively, the statement predicted. (By James Lee)
