Taipei's biggest-ever food show generates record business

Taipei, June 29 (CNA) The annual Taipei International Food Show has generated record business through procurement meetings, despite the gloomy global economy, the organizers said Friday. The show, which kicked off June 27, hosted 876 procurement meetings during its first two days for 76 international buyers from 22 countries, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said. The business generated from those meetings reached US$46.89 million, up 26.7 percent from US$37 million a year ago, said Alice Wang, the TAITRA staffer in charge of the event. In addition, Wang noted, the number of buyers from emerging markets has increased remarkably over the past few years, while the numbers from developed countries such as the United States, Canada and Japan have maintained similar levels. The four-day event, now in its 22nd year, has attracted more than 1,000 exhibitors from home and abroad, according to TAITRA. Among the 2,000-plus booths, the show has attracted more than 450 exhibitors from nearly 30 countries. The event also coincides with three other related shows -- packaging, processing and machinery. Together they are expected to attract roughly 7,000 local and foreign buyers and 55,000 visitors, the council said. In addition to new product launches, there will also be cooking shows, competitions and various other promotional activities. Seminars on various topics will also take place, including non-thermal food processing, the Taiwan-China food market, the fishery trade, and food-grade oils, TAITRA added. The show will run until Saturday at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall and at Exhibition Hall 1. (By James Lee)
