EU in accession talks with tiny Montenegro

The European Union will open accession talks with Montenegro on Friday, in a move meant to reassure other nations that the bloc remains open for enlargement despite its deep economic and structural crisis.
EU officials said Friday that the bloc's leaders meeting in Brussels for an economic summit signed off on a recommendation to formally open the talks later Friday. They are expected to last several years.
Despite the current banking crisis, membership in the European Union remains the goal of all Balkan nations. Croatia has just completed negotiations and is slated to become the 28th member next year. Other western Balkans states _ Albania, Bosnia, Macedonia and Serbia _ are all in various stages of the accession process, as are Turkey and Iceland.
