The Waikato Chiefs emerged from a four-week layoff to strongly defend their place atop the Super 15 rugby standings with a 27-21 win on Friday over the Otago Highlanders at the start of the tournament's 16th round.
The Chiefs held a four-point lead over South Africa's Stormers when the southern hemisphere competition took its first-ever break for a midyear test series between New Zealand and Ireland, Australia and Wales and South Africa and England.
