$500K federal grant helps fund temporary post-tsunami workers in American Samoa

A federal grant will help train and retain temporary workers hired to help with cleanup efforts in the wake of the deadly 2009 tsunami that struck American Samoa.
The tsunami spawned by an 8.7-magnitude earthquake was the worst disaster in the U.S. territory's history. Thirty-four people in American Samoa and more than 100 in neighboring Samoa were killed.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced Wednesday the $500,000 grant will allow American Samoa to continue training and employing the workers.
So far, the department has awarded American Samoa more than $25 million to fund temporary jobs to help with cleanup and recovery.
