EU: Zimbabweans aren't benefiting from gems

The European Union says Zimbabwe's diamond wealth is not being used to help its people
Ambassador Aldo Dell'Ariccia, the top EU envoy in Zimbabwe, led a delegation of Western diplomats on a two-day tour of Zimbabwe's Marange diamond fields that ended Thursday. He says it is impossible to determine how much of the country's diamond revenue reaches government coffers.
Finance Minister Tendai Biti, whose Movement for Multiparty Democracy is in an uneasy governing alliance with longtime President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, has said the government is benefiting far less than it should. There are concerns the money is being diverted to the military and other Mugabe loyalists.
Dell'Ariccia says, "For the moment, the benefit of diamonds is not translating to the betterment of lives for the people."
