Shah Deniz consortium backs Nabucco West pipeline

Shah Deniz consortium backs Nabucco West pipeline

An international consortium developing a major offshore Caspian Sea natural gas field in Azerbaijan has thrown its support behind a European Union-backed pipeline project.
The Shah Deniz consortium said Thursday that it was backing the Nabucco West route, which is slated to run from Turkey's border with Bulgaria to a hub in Austria. This would complement another planned pipe across Turkey from Azerbaijan.
An alternative option known as the South East Europe Pipeline, which was being assembled with Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, has been shelved.
The Shah Deniz field is operated by British major BP, which controls a 25.5 percent share. Other project partners include Norway's Statoil, also with a 25.5 percent stake, and Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR with 10 percent.
