German unemployment drops to 6.6 percent

Official figures show that unemployment in Germany dropped modestly in June as the country's labor market momentum continued to slow in the face of widespread problems across the 17-country eurozone.
The Federal Labor Agency said Thursday that the unemployment rate fell to 6.6 percent in June from 6.7 percent in May, as the number of Germans out of work fell by 46,000 to 2.8 million.
Labor office head Frank-Juergen Weise noted that the unemployment rate usually drops more sharply in June with the increase of seasonal work, and said the slight dip was a "sign of weaker performance."
In seasonally adjusted terms the unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.8 percent.
