UN extends mandate of Golan monitors

The Security Council has extended the mandate of the United Nations force monitoring the ceasefire in the Golan Heights between Israel and Syria for six more months.
In the resolution adopted unanimously Wednesday, the Council called on both parties to exercise maximum restraint and prevent any breaches of the ceasefire and the area of separation.
The observer force was established in 1974 to supervise the disengagement accord between Syrian and Israeli forces after their 1973 war.
In his latest report on the activities of the observer force, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted that the situation in the Middle East is likely to remain tense for the foreseeable future.
