DEA makes smuggling arrests in Puerto Rico airport

U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents are making arrests at Puerto Rico's largest airport and on the U.S. mainland in a crackdown on workers accused of smuggling drugs on board commercial flights.
The DEA says it has arrest warrants for nearly 50 people, including airline employees and baggage handlers at San Juan's Luis Marin Munoz International Airport. A DEA statement issued at the start of Wednesday's raid said the airport workers smuggled cocaine and heroin to New York, Orlando and other cities for at least a decade.
Puerto Rico is a U.S. island territory and a major trans-shipment point for drugs bound for the mainland. The island's representative in Congress and other local officials have been seeking increased U.S. federal aid to combat an apparent increase in smuggling and violence.
