Over 200 U.S. lawmakers extend congratulations to President Ma

Washington, May 18 (CNA) More than 200 members of the United States Congress have extended congratulations to President Ma Ying-jeou on the occasion of his May 20 inauguration to his second term, Taiwan's representative office in the U.S. said Friday. In their letters and statements, the congressional members paid tribute to Taiwan's democratic development and Ma's achievements in improving cross-Taiwan Strait relations, said the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the U.S. They also pledged continued support for the Taiwan Relations Act and for the island's efforts to participate in international events and to join the U.S. visa waiver program, the office said. Senators James Inhofe (R-OK) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ), co-chairs of the Senate Taiwan Caucus, and 11 of their colleagues have sent individual letters of congratulations to Ma, the office said. They include Tim Johnson (D-SD), chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Rob Portman (R-OH) and Rand Paul, (R-KY). The Congressional Taiwan Caucus and the Republican Study Committee in the House of Representatives have also indicated continued support for Taiwan, in a statement endorsed by scores of congressmen, the representative office said. Meanwhile, Jeff Miller (R-FL), chairman of the House's Veterans Affairs Committee, and Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), chairman of the 43-member Congressional Black Caucus, also sent formal letters of congratulations to Ma, the representative office added.
