Guyana legislators target ex-president's pension

Guyana's opposition coalition says it is changing tactics in its battle to slash the pension of former President Bharrat Jagdeo.
The coalition said Friday it will drop a court case demanding a cut in Jagdeo's $15,000 monthly pension. Instead it will propose legislation to cut the amount by at least one-third. The coalition says the 48-year-old former leader is healthy and capable of working.
Parliament Speaker Raphael Trotman said Thursday that legislators could not debate the issue because the case was still in court. Parliament next meets on May 30.
The opposition Partnership For National Unity and Alliance For Change has a one-seat majority in 65-seat assembly. Even if the bill passes, it would still require approval from President Donald Ramotar, who is expected to veto it.
