HTC executive named as 2012 Olympic torchbearer

Taipei, May 9 (CNA) Peter Chou, chief executive officer of Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp., has been named as one of the torchbearers in the London 2012 Summer Olympics, the company announced Wednesday. He was selected because of his great contribution to the development of the global mobile industry development, leadership in Taiwan's technology industry, and role in bringing a Taiwan brand to the international market, the company said in a statement. Chou will be among the 8,000 people who will carry the Olympic flame on a 70-day tour of the U.K, starting on May 19. He will run with the torch in London on July 6, three weeks before the Olympics opening ceremony in Stratford on July 27. "I'm honored to be named as one of the torchbearers of the London 2012 Olympic Games," Chou said. "I hope I can shine on behalf Taiwan." Each bearer in the relay will carry a gold colored triangular torch that has a meshed appearance. "While carrying the flame in the relay, every step I take will represent my deepest support for Taiwan's athletes attending the London 2012 Olympic Games," Chou said. He said the honor also means a lot to HTC, as the company started in Europe and began its brand road map in London in 2006. This deeply demonstrates the company's long-term commitment to consumers in Europe, Chou said. The Olympic Flame, which stands for peace, unity and friendship, will be lit in Greece and will arrive May 18 in the U.K, where it will be carried through 1,019 communities. (By Jeffrey Wu)
