Chinese dissidents says they do not expect the government to ease controls on their critics even as it appears Chen Guangcheng will be allowed to leave China with his family.
They say that authorities might even tighten the screws on prominent critics to prevent them from seeking similar offers ahead of a leadership handover during which stability is paramount.
Chen was believed to be still in hospital Saturday and it was unclear if further steps had been taken to enable him to travel.
Chen is a blind, self-taught legal activist and symbol in China's civil rights movement. He triggered a diplomatic standoff between China and the United States after he escaped house arrest and sought refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing last week.
