Consumer disputes in 2011 up 10% from 2010

Taipei, May 2 (CNA) The number of consumer disputes reported in 2011 totaled 43,918, up 9.26 percent from a year ago, the Executive Yuan's Consumer Protection Department said Wednesday. Of all, 41,781 cases were reported by consumers and 2,137 cases were mediated by consumer protection groups, it said. The top five categories involved in consumer disputes were telecommunication services, online games, cram school programs, cellphone purchases and repair, and clothing and footwear products, the department added. Consumer disputes in the five categories accounted for 9,789 cases, or 29.69 percent of all cases reported, it said. The department said that in all reported cases related to telecommunication services, most of them were complaints about phone or wireless Internet signals. Among all complaints involving online games, the main disputes were about determination and handling of regulatory violations, it said. The department said it has asked the National Communications Commission to draft a proposal to supervise telecommunication operators over service improvement and adjustment of mobile phone rates.
