Chunghwa Telecom aims to boost subscribers to digital TV services

Taipei, May 2 (CNA) Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest telecom service provider, said Wednesday it plans to more than double the number of new subscribers to its digital TV services during the London 2012 Summer Olympics compared with the event four years earlier. During the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, Chunghwa Telecom added about 70,000 subscribers to its multimedia-on-demand (MOD) platform, which was authorized to broadcast high definition programs of the games, according to the company. "We hope to more than double the numbers this year from those four years ago," said Chunghwa Telecom Chairman Lu Shyue-ching. "It was our first time to broadcast the Olympic Games in 2008. This time we will offer better broadcasting quality thanks to the effects of digital convergence," he noted. Lu made the remarks at a press conference held to discuss Chunghwa Telecom's collaboration on cloud computing data centers with U.S. chip maker Intel Corp. The two companies have jointly conducted research on power management of cloud computing data centers and smart TV technologies. Chunghwa Telecom expects to launch a new version of its MOD platform before the Olympic Games kick off in July, as the company will use Intel's chipsets in its new set-top boxes for the second-generation digital TV platform, Lu said. Launched in 2005, the MOD platform saw the number of its subscribers exceed 1 million last year with an average revenue per user of NT$157 (US$5.37), according to Chunghwa Telecom. The company has forecast the total subscribers to reach 1.5 million by the end of this year, partially because of an increased demand for programs of the Olympics Games. Currently, only Chunghwa Telecom and Elta TV have obtained the right to air the Olympic Games through new media platforms, such as mobile phones and Internet Protocol Television, which is digital footage delivered on a person's television through a high-speed Internet connection. Elta TV, which is carried on Chunghwa Telecom's MOD system, will be able to broadcast the Olympic Games on 11 approved channels this year. (By Jeffrey Wu)
