Parliaments urge protection for Somali lawmakers

The organization representing parliaments in more than 160 nations has urged authorities in Somalia to prevent more attacks on the country's lawmakers in the run-up to August legislative elections.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union on Wednesday condemned bombings in the war-ravaged Horn of Africa nation a day earlier, including a suicide attack that targeted a cafe in the town of Dhusomareb, north of the capital Mogadishu.
The attack on the cafe, where government and military officials were meeting as part of a delegation to help form a local government, killed at least two lawmakers and wounded several others.
Abdelwahad Radi, president of Geneva-based IPU, called on Somalia's government to make "every effort" to protect lawmakers before the scheduled elections.
